Pavement markings
A solid line on the left of your lane means you must not pass or change lanes. A broken line means you may pass or change lanes if safe from both front and rear to do so. It is permissible to turn left over a single or double solid line onto a public thoroughfare, private road or driveway.
Confusing is that traffic laws are provincial, so for cross-country drivers, we would need to know 13 sets of rules. But few even know that there is anything to know. The yellow-line rules in Ontario for example are completely different (advisory only).
I did a quick review of the MTO and the rules are the same.
Yellow lines separate traffic travelling in opposite directions. White lines separate traffic travelling in the same direction.
